Lamination is the process of bonding products together in layers. It can be done either by pressure or through a bonging agent like glue. This process uses pressure, heat, and time to achieve a desired bond strength that can then be tested to ensure proper performance.

Heat setting is done for several reasons. it can be done to align the yarns of a fabric and lock them in place without adding a chemical component. Heat set on natural fibers improve the look of wrinkles or is used to aide in reduction of shrinkage as natural fibers do not hold to a memory. Synthetic materials will heat set once a certain temperature is reached and the alignment will then be held after the heat set.

Brushing/Napping

Brushing/Napping are mechanical finishes where wire hooks are used to pull fiber from twisted yarns to raise the look of the material. Each material is treated based on the customer’s request and may be napped on one or both sides to achieve a desired look or feel. Napping should be on spun yarns vs filament yarns as fibers cannot be raised from filament yarns.

Sanding

Sanding is a mechanical abrasion to the surface of a textile to achieve a certain appearance. Sanding can range from a scratch only to an aggressive weight reduction.

Shearing

Shearing is the mechanical action of cutting fibers to a desired length uniformly across the width and length of a material.
